Reconnecting with Guatemala: My Journey After Three Years

After three long years of waiting, the pandemic had finally released its grip on the world, and I could once again embark on an adventure to the beautiful country of Guatemala. This trip was extra special, as my dear friend Becky and I had planned to not only reunite with our friends and family but also explore the enchanting Antigua Guatemala. Becky, with her Guatemalan roots tracing back to her father, had never had the chance to visit this captivating city. As for me, I was born and raised in Guatemala but now call California home. I'm also a passionate photographer, and both Becky and I decided to journey to Guatemala to photograph a wedding. With excitement bubbling in our hearts, we set our sights on October 3, 2022, for our long-anticipated journey, which spanned 10 memorable days. Join me as I relive the magic of my Guatemalan adventure, filled with heartwarming reunions, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable moments captured on 35 mm film.

Reuniting with Loved Ones:

The moment I stepped off the plane and into Guatemala, I was overwhelmed with emotion. The long separation from my family and friends had been agonizing, and the pandemic had made it even more challenging to see them. As I embraced my loved ones at the airport, tears of joy streamed down our faces. It was a reunion filled with hugs, laughter, and the overwhelming feeling of gratitude for being together again.

Photographing a Guatemalan Wedding:

Our trip took a unique twist when my friend Becky and I expressed our desire to photograph a wedding in Guatemala. We reached out to our local connections, and serendipity smiled upon us. We were granted the opportunity to capture the beauty and love of a traditional Guatemalan wedding. It was an honor to be a part of this special day, witnessing the rich cultural traditions and heartfelt moments that unfolded. Becky's and my photography skills truly shone as we captured the essence of the ceremony and celebrations.

Exploring Antigua Guatemala:

Antigua Guatemala, with its cobblestone streets and colonial charm, beckoned us to explore its historic beauty. For Becky, this was a journey to connect with her heritage, as her father hailed from Guatemala. For me, it was a return to the place I had grown up and the chance to rediscover its enchantment through the lens of my camera. Together, we roamed the city's streets, admiring the vibrantly colored buildings, visiting historic churches, and indulging in local cuisine. The fusion of Spanish colonial architecture and indigenous influences created a unique atmosphere that left us in awe.

Discovering the Beauty of Lago Atitlan:

Our adventure didn't stop in Antigua; we embarked on a journey to Lago Atitlan, one of Guatemala's most picturesque destinations. Surrounded by towering volcanoes, this pristine lake exuded tranquility and natural beauty. We explored the lakeside villages, took boat rides, and hiked to vantage points that offered breathtaking views of the serene waters and the imposing volcanoes.

Capturing Memories on 35 mm Film:

Throughout our trip, we opted to capture moments on 35 mm film. The nostalgic and authentic feel of film photography added depth and character to our memories. Each click of the camera was an intentional pause to savor the beauty of the moment, knowing that the images would develop into cherished mementos.

Conclusion:

My journey to Guatemala in October 2022 was more than a mere trip; it was a heartwarming reunion with loved ones, a chance to witness and participate in local traditions, and an exploration of the captivating landscapes and history of this Central American gem. As I look back at the 35 mm photos, I am reminded of the joy, connection, and adventure that defined this remarkable trip. Guatemala will always hold a special place in my heart, and I eagerly anticipate the day when I can return to its warm embrace once again.
